Ankhlave Arts Alliance

Ankhlave Arts Alliance is a W.A.G.E. certified nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization for the advancement of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) in the contemporary art realm. AnkhLave (that’s “Enclave” with an “Ankh”) is based in New York City, and produces annual programming including our AnkhLave Garden Project Fellowship, AnkhLave Curator Fellowship, and the Ankhlave Public Artist in Residence. We believe art is an ideal platform for the exchange of ideas and perspectives. Art allows people the opportunity to engage in conversations that can be difficult to confront, politically and socially, and opens the floor for conversations between people of diverse communities that may not have engaged otherwise. We believe art has the power to influence, change and even subvert culture in favor of more nuanced perspectives and for more equitable presence within the greater society. In keeping with our mission to facilitate exchange of ideas between and within marginalized communities, we seek to present programming beyond the traditional white-walled gallery space, and in alternative public spaces within BIPOC communities. One reason for this is to honor the legacy of many BIPOC people’s Indigenous heritage from around the world, which can include creative works that are sculpted, worn, performed in or displayed outdoors in nature. Spaces like botanical and community gardens are inclusive as it can be transformed into an unexpected exhibition space, inspiring wonder and curiosity when stumbled upon. Many communities within the BIPOC umbrella are polarized by the art establishment due to colonialism, with many of their homeland’s artworks taken and exhibited for non BIPOC audiences. In this sense, even their own people's work becomes othered to them. Moreover, art history has historically been authored through the European gaze, and omitted many experiences and viewpoints around the world. Contemporary art in recent history is becoming more inclusive, though many potential BIPOC audience members need more representation in order to feel included in the contemporary art conversation. We believe the best way to can elevate BIPOC voices and the communities they are representing is by bringing their artwork to the people, in a public space that is unexpected and accessible for maximum community engagement.

HealthEd Connect

HealthEd Connect builds on a solid foundation of 20 years of experience with volunteer Community Health Workers who are directly involved with the families and special needs in their villages. Many of these villages are now facing incredible challenges as the number of orphaned children, primarily due to HIV/AIDS, has grown dramatically and the typical surviving caregiver is an aging grandmother who has lost both her husband and children. Going forward, HealthEd Connect will remain flexible and adaptive by connecting villagers and their leaders to expanding visions of possibilities, targeted training, and access to resources.

OneReef Worldwide Stewardship

OneReef's Vision is to create vibrant reefs and thriving communities. OneReef's Mission is to partner with island communities to combine traditional stewardship and modern resources to protect at least 25% of coral reefs across Micronesia. Less than 5% of the billions of dollars spent annually on the environment is made available directly to locals who manage ecosystems. We work to fill this unmet need - we partner directly with island communities to protect reefs and recover fisheries. Our mission is based on the insight that island communities are more effective environmental stewards when their traditional knowledge and practices are combined with the right scientific, financial, and technical partnerships and resources. It ensures that practical and cost-effective solutions emerge. OneReef's Community Partnership Model is a proven way to accomplish long-term conservation success: - Through equitable agreements, traditional knowledge is combined with the right partnerships and resources, and economic benefits are directly linked to conservation - Agreements include the community's 20-year vision, shared commitments and expected outcomes, a spatial management plan, impact monitoring plan, and more. - This results in innovative, practical and cost-effective solutions to enforce managed fishing zones, measure impact, and build social cohesion around conservation that endures. Why the OneReef Community Partnership model has proven to be effective: 1. The right people in the right places Our island community partners have a strong "eco-identity" and take responsibility for their environment. They want their reefs to thrive in the face of over-fishing and climate change. 2. The right tools and resources Our island community partners need financial, scientific, and technical resources to protect their reefs. OneReef mentors community members: (1) Training, tools, infrastructure to increase agency (2) Support for management plans (3) Science-based impact measures (4) Long-term, leveraged financing 3. The right partnerships We align private and public funds, technology, and science. Working hand-in-hand, OneReef, island communities, elected leaders, funders, and technical and scientific partners combine modern resources with traditional stewardship. Joint problem-solving and meaningful engagement create enduring value.
