Fair Start Movement
The Problem: Family planning in the world today is based upon a parent-centered and isolationist model that hurts children, families, communities, and our environment. That model prevents the realization of freedom and is the fundamental source of our social and ecological crises. That model is the product of governments and businesses that profit from population growth, want to avoid collective obligations that require investing in rather than exploiting future generations, and who helped eliminate the responsibilities inherent in having kids as a means of accelerating growth. The Solution: Having Kids acts as a “part replacer,” replacing the morally incoherent parent-centered model, which has been debunked by theorists, with the truly human rights-based and child-centered Fair Start model. That move will also create space for the development of even better models. Future children should be the focus of family planning laws and policies because they have the most at stake. That change is the key to freedom – the freedom to a say in the rules under which one lives, to equal opportunities in life, and the freedom from others that is nature. That is what a decolonized future looks like. This is not merely theoretical, but the basis for concrete action we can take today at multiple levels of social change – legal, institutional, cultural, discursive, etc. The Fair Start model is the best construction of the moral and legal right to have children. Here are examples of how Having Kids is replacing the old and isolationist model with the Fair Start model. Having Kids is more a praxis of truly human rights-based family planning than an entity. We invite you to join the transition to better family planning by taking actions to ensure kids a fair start in life, and speaking out about what you’ve done. The human brain is predisposed to focus on the immediate over the important. Working for social change without family planning reform is the worst case of this tendency, but together we can change direction. Having Kids is not just another voice in the crowd. Instead, we make sure all voices matter by changing the nature of the crowd.

BUFFALO FIELD CAMPAIGN
To stop the harassment and slaughter of Yellowstone’s wild buffalo herds; protect the natural habitat of wild, free-roaming buffalo and other native wildlife; and work with all people—especially Indigenous Nations—to honor and protect the sacredness of the wild buffalo. We pursue our mission through a variety of coordinated strategies: In the field: Our volunteers conduct regular patrols to track and locate buffalo. Teams monitor buffalo movements; document herd activity with field notes, photographs, and video; and remain prepared to initiate nonviolent action as necessary to defend these magnificent animals. In a great example of BFC synergy: our field patrols also collect scientific data for use by our legal and legislative teams, biologists, and other organizations—adding another layer of value to our field campaigns. In the political/legislative arena: We support a variety of efforts to inform local, state, and federal politicians and legislators of the plight of the buffalo—and the importance of wild populations. In the courts: Our legal team fights judicial battles to defend the buffalo’s right to roam freely and live according to their natural instincts. In the public mind: In addition to providing information for educators, BFC actively promotes the needs of the buffalo through various public forums such as community meetings; information booths in and around Yellowstone; select conventions, expositions, and festivals; our annual roadshow; and more.

LIGHTHOUSE RANCH FOR BOYS INC
The Lighthouse Ranch was founded in March 1979 by Jim and Lovella Yohe. It is located on a beautiful 40 acre site in Southeast Louisiana. Over one thousand boys have lived at the Ranch and have benefited from its program. Lighthouse Ranch for Boys is a Louisiana licensed, Class A child residential facility located in Loranger, LA. The program is designed for boys (12 through 17 years of age) whom are in need of a stable environment. Many of the over 1,000 boys which have lived at Lighthouse Ranch since its founding in 1979, have been victims of abuse, neglect, drugs, and unstable home environments, which have left the boys to develop maladaptive behavioral issues. By providing a stable, consistent, and structured environment which is both educational and therapeutic in nature, Ranch boys are able to focus on improving their lives. The Ranch has an on-campus accredited school, Lighthouse Christian Academy, with a Master Certified teacher. The school is recognized by the Tangipahoa school board as an Alternative Educational Program. Upon admission to the Ranch, most boys are struggling with academics, with wide learning gaps, a history of poor school attendance, and/or failing grades which places them at high risk for “dropping out” of school and repeating the cycle of poverty. By utilizing a one-on-one approach in a relaxed but structured environment, boys are able to work to close learning gaps, and work ahead in their academics. In addition to classroom style learning, Ranch boys are able to participate in horsemanship and agriculture electives. Learning how to care for animals, ride horses, grow a garden, prepare meals, and complete chores not only allows for the development of future employable skills, but fosters a spirit of independence and growth. The goal is to give residents a foundation for creating better future.
