Learn About Deforestation

Deforestation is a significant challenge that affects the health of our planet and the well-being of communities worldwide, but there have been many positive developments in recent years that offer hope for reducing its impacts. According to the Global Forest Resources Assessment, the rate of deforestation has decreased by 50% since the 1990s, and many countries have implemented effective policies and programs to promote sustainable forestry and reduce deforestation rates. Additionally, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of engaging local communities in forest management, promoting agroforestry and sustainable agriculture practices, and addressing the root causes of deforestation, such as illegal logging and forest conversion for agricultural use. These positive trends have contributed to improvements in forest cover and biodiversity, with some studies reporting that forest restoration efforts have led to an increase in the number of species and an improvement in the quality of ecosystems. These positive developments indicate that progress is being made in creating a more sustainable and biodiverse planet, and that there is hope for a future where we are able to live in balance with the natural world.

La Maraña, Corp.

We imagine, design, and build collectively. Since 2014, La Maraña is a non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable community development in Puerto Rico, using participatory design to democratize power, strengthen local capacities and transform the territory alongside communities. During these twelve years, community participation has been the axis of our work, guiding projects according to necessities, experiences and social, political and climatic realities of each community. We have collaborated with over 30 projects and generated investment for community infrastructure. We believe that communities have the right to imagine, co-design and co-create the spaces we inhabit. That is why we work from collective management, active listening and knowledge exchange, recognizing community intelligence and strengthening people's capacity to lead and transform their territories.
